ÆLFGYTHE BORDER MORRIS
ÆLFGYTHE - Some Definitions
Aelf (n.f.)
An aelf-maiden. One of the fair folk of wondrous beauty, perilous
for mere mortal man to look upon. Excelling in dancing and music
with a penchant for weaving tinkling bells about their raiment.
Lithe and graceful in movement, yet fierce in the clashing of the
aelfsticke, in which they are marvellously accomplished.
Gythe (n.m.)
Dark inhabitants of the hollow hills, renowned for their making
and playing of music interwoven with a strange magicke.
Fearsome to behold yet skilled tunesmiths they accompany
the Aelfs in their pagan reverie.
Aelfgythe
A coming-together of Aelf and Gythe in an explosion of dance and music.
A fusion of proud beauty and animal passion, a whirling mass of black
and silver to confound the eye and delight the ear. From their spiritual home of Aelfechurch (Aelfenholme in the old tongue) they travel near
and far to entrance simple mortals, for whom one sight of their rhythmic swaying can mean total enchantment.
